March 2020 Newsletter

Nowruz Pirooz!

Wishing each of you, your family and loved ones a very happy Nowruz! March is our busiest ZAC month of programming, and with it each year comes the joy of Nowruz, a New Day. We usher in the Spring equinox during this special time, we begin to watch flowers bud, foliage come to life, birds chirping, sunnier days, and the renewal of personal resolutions as a new year unfolds.

This month’s newsletter is packed with a variety of events and we sincerely hope you will get involved. From gahambars and the Dar ni Pori Bake-a-thon, to our sponsorship of the Oriental Institute’s Persian Nowruz Celebration, our annual Nowruz celebration, and ZAC Clean-Up Day.

March is about participation and getting involved in whatever capacity you can. It’s also a popular time to renew your membership to our beloved ZAC. So let’s join together this month to usher in a new year of growth and interconnectedness. On behalf of the entire board of directors, thank you for your participation, for your ideas, for your generosity, and for building the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

Hamāzor Hamā Ashō-bēd!
May we all be united in strength and righteousness!

2020: The Year of Vision

For decades, the Zoroastrian community in North America has advanced thanks to the energy, foresight, and ultimately, having a vision for the future. The ‘Pioneer’ generation as they are appropriately referred to, have sewn the seeds for future generations by building community, from physical structures to constitutions, that ultimately paved the way for organizations to manage themselves, grow their memberships and thrive in a new diaspora.

This year, 2020 for obvious literal reasons represents the year of vision, and we use this opportunity to redouble our efforts to chart a course for the future; to ask ourselves questions focused on where we want to be in 2050, how we get there, what we envision for our children and our children’s children. Last month, ZAC started this process attracting members 50 years of age and under. As you’ll read in the newsletter on page 3, we will be holding another for those aged 50+.

Our special thanks to Zinnia Elavia for leading the way on this critical series of important focus groups! Our vision is our future. We look forward to your input!

May we all be united in strength and righteousness!

Ava Project Update

As members will be aware, we had taken a loan of $350,000 from Providence Bank to fund the Ava Project. Since we started making loan payments in May 2018, we had already paid over $29,000 in interest. Had we continued making payments until our 5 year payoff plan, we would have ended up paying interest charges of over $51,000.

Thanks to the exemplary efforts of our Ava Project committee, the generosity of our members, and extraordinary fundraising efforts of our volunteers, in December 2019 we found ourselves in a position to pay off the loan and reduce our future interest burden. The ZAC board immediately made an unanimous decision to pay off the Providence Bank loan by supplementing the balance through a temporary transfer of $91,405 from our General Fund.

With the grace of Ahura Mazda and your ongoing generosity, we have paid off our loan and saved over $22,000 in interest payments over the next 3+ years. However, this payoff still leaves our General Fund $91,405 short of breaking even on our total Ava Project expenses.

As we enter 2020, we would like to renew our appeal to our members to continue meeting your pledges and donating generously towards the Ava Project so that we can recover the $91,405 balance and successfully close the books on Ava Project this year itself!

Further financial details are published in the January 2020 newsletter below.

ZAC’s First-Ever Youth Project Fair Attracts Record Turnout

We have yet another reason to be so proud, not only in the promise of our youth, but in the way our community came together to make an historic event truly successful. Nov. 17 brought together students of our religion classes, their teachers, parents and the community as a whole, to celebrate the power of religious education, creativity and visualization at the first-ever Youth Project Fair.

In Science Fair style and format, our students put together large display boards and realistic visual arrangements to highlight specific elements of the Zarathushti faith. From Persian Gardens and Nowruz Haft-Seen tables to on-stage presentations on religious principles and history, our youth and their talents were shining.

We would be remiss to not give a huge thank you to Zenobia Damania, Persis Driver, Persis Guard and Khursheed Ichaporia for their selfless devotion, creative curriculum and boundless energy in encouraging our youth to think outside the box; and to promote learning through research, visualization and presenting their findings to others. We also would like to thank the parents for their support, time and energy in helping guide their children through the project’s success.

This important event shows that when we come together we energize our community, infuse our youth with knowledge and confidence, and show once again why Chicago leads the way as a trailblazing Zarathushti community in North America.

May we all be united in strength and righteousness!

THE NEED FOR EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AT ZAC

On Saturday, Nov. 9, ZAC will play host to a special and critically important meeting: Emergency Preparedness Training Program for Religious Organizations and Places of Worship.

We live in unpredictable times, now more than ever, and the entire board is united in our desire to educate internally and externally on exactly who we are as Zoroastrians, the storied legacy of our religion, and our participation on the interfaith front in standing against intolerance and extremism in all its forms.

ZAC is honored to host the event and to join forces with other local religious organizations. The US Department of Justice in collaboration with US Attorney’s office, FBI and Burr Ridge Police, will provide training on how to develop an Emergency Operations plan to handle, terrorism, gun violence and crimes against religious institutions; and improve partnerships between law enforcement and faith communities. Please take a moment to read through the in-depth background about this important event, and RSVP to Rohinton Rivetna if you are able to join us.

May we all be united in strength and righteousness!

ZAC HOSTS INAUGURAL ‘GRAND JASHAN’ TO COMMEMORATE BEHRAM ROJ, ARBAB GUIV BAAJ

October 5, 2019 marked a significant moment for the Zoroastrian Association of Metropolitan Chicago as the community came together to worship as one, at the first-ever Grand Jashan commemorating Behram Roj and the Arbab Guiv Baaj. ZAC is so thankful to Farida Sharyari for her grand idea and organization of this event! Thank you to Zinnia Elavia for helping with coordination of this event as well.

Special thanks to our priests: Jamshed Antia, Boman Damkevala, Neville Karanjia, Zarvan Karanjia, Freddy Gonda, Sheroy Gonda, Pesi Vazifdar and Neville Vazifdar, for filling the hall with beautifully recited prayers. Afterwards, around 125 community members and friends gathered for a delicious dinner catered by Jamshed Kavina, and hosted graciously by the Dukandar, Pooniwala, Rustomji families. Thank you as well, to the Sharyari family for the delicious Kheemo and yummy desserts and Kiku Engineer for the tasty mango ice cream.

ZAC is grateful to the organizers, host families and our revered mobeds for bringing the community together to celebrate the philanthropy and legacy of our community’s namesake, Arbab Rustom Guiv. We remain forever grateful for his generosity.

Hamāzor Hamā Ashō-bēd!

May we all be united in strength and righteousness!
